The Largo appassionato from Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 2 in A Major (Op. 2 No. 2) has been arranged for String Orchestra by Joseph I. Corporon.
The original composition for piano featured lyrical chords in the right hand over a staccato bass line in the left hand. This transfers well to String Orchestra – the Violins and Viola play the chords while the Cello and Bass play the bass line; Cellos play arco, Basses start with pizzicato and move back and forth between pizzicato and arco.
The movement is a slow Rondo. The theme is played twice each time it appears. The second cadence ends nearly an octave higher that it began, and leads to the next theme. Near the end of the movement, the theme is presented dramatically in D minor with loud accented notes. The tension breaks with a final statement of the D major theme played by Violin 1 an octave higher than it has been heard before, with Violin 2 playing a 16th note accompaniment pattern.
The movement ends quietly, but not before some final playful phrases traded between the instruments.
