The classic hymn, Nearer, My God, to Thee has been arranged for String Orchestra by Joseph I. Corporon. It is equally at home for concerts or worship settings.
The piece begins with the melody in the Violas accompanied by the Cellos. Both Violin sections and Contrabass enter on the first Refrain. If you are using this in a worship setting with congregational singing, the repeated section beginning at measure 17 can be played for any number of verses.
The section beginning at measure 33 should be used for the final verse of the hymn. Here Violin I plays the melody up an octave and the other sections accompany with triplets. The final repeated section at measure 41 is optional if you would like your String Orchestra to play the Refrain one last time after the singing is finished.
